PTE for Canada: what it is used for and the CLB you need
Canada does not accept PTE Academic for IRCC purposes. IRCC has accepted PTE Core for economic-class immigration since 30 January 2024, which is exactly why the Core track exists as its own test, not a variant of Academic.
What a PTE score is used for in Canada
Permanent residence (Express Entry)
PTE Core is approved by IRCC for economic-class programs; results map to Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) bands.
Provincial Nominee Programs
Accepted across many provincial streams that nominate skilled workers for residence.
Study & admission
PTE Academic is accepted by Canadian universities and colleges as proof of English for course entry.
Post-graduation work permit

The scores you need
Express Entry works in Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) levels, not the 10-90 scale directly. IRCC converts your PTE Core score to CLB, one skill at a time, so each card gives the PTE Core score behind the level.
The minimum CLB needed to be eligible for the Federal Skilled Worker program. IRCC converts each skill on its own and takes the lowest, so all four have to clear their own number.
A higher CLB in each of the four skills lifts your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points under Express Entry. CLB 9 is the band most Express Entry candidates aim for.
Listening, reading, writing and speaking results must all come from a single PTE Core sitting.
