PTE Superior English 2026: What Score You Actually Need in Each Skill

PTE Superior English, worth 20 points on Australia's skilled migration points test, is no longer a flat 79 in every skill. For tests sat from 7 August 2025 onward, the Department of Home Affairs requires at least Listening 69, Reading 70, Writing 85, and Speaking 88 on PTE Academic. Listening and Reading actually eased, while Writing and Speaking got harder, which changes where your prep time should go.
These figures were checked directly against the Department of Home Affairs on 14 August 2026. Score requirements can change, so confirm the live table on the official Superior English page before you book.
What score do you actually need for PTE Superior English in 2026?
You need at least Listening 69, Reading 70, Writing 85, and Speaking 88 on PTE Academic, all four at once, for a test sat on or after 7 August 2025. Home Affairs states this directly on its Superior English page, with a note that explains why the number moved: "PTE Academic has the same name as the previous version of the test that was accepted before 7 August 2025. However, the test and scores are different."
That is because 7 August 2025 is also the date Pearson refreshed the PTE Academic exam itself, adding two new speaking tasks and changing the format from about 20 question types to 22. Home Affairs recalibrated its score table to match the new test, and it did the same for the other two bands, not just Superior:
Is PTE 79 still the target for Superior English?
The former flat 79 rule applies to PTE Academic tests taken on or before 6 August 2025. Whether an older result remains usable depends on the visa and its test-age rules. Check the relevant Home Affairs page; do not assume every result is valid until 6 August 2028.
If a guide, forum post, or agent tells you to aim for 79 across the board, ask when it was written. Anything published before mid-2025 is describing a test you can no longer sit.
Which PTE skill is hardest to reach for Superior English?
Speaking is the hardest, sitting at 88, only two points under the maximum possible score of 90. Writing comes second at 85. Both are higher than the old flat 79, while Listening (69) and Reading (70) are both lower, so your prep priorities should flip if you were planning around the old number.
Writing and Speaking require high scores under the current Superior English thresholds. Identify the task types where you repeatedly lose marks, then practise those weaknesses. Task counts alone do not tell you how much an individual response changes the final scaled score.
The lower numerical Listening and Reading thresholds do not establish that these skills are easier for every learner. The official thresholds are evidence requirements; they do not explain an individual candidate's strengths or how Pearson combines task performance.
How do you hit Writing 85?
Write Essay is one useful place to inspect content, organisation, grammar and vocabulary. Write a response that addresses the actual prompt within the word range. Its number of rubric traits does not prove it will produce the largest score increase for you; use repeated errors to set your priority.
Summarise Written Text is worth mastering next, since it is quick to learn and reliably scorable: one sentence, under 75 words, that captures the passage's main idea in your own words. Write from Dictation also counts toward Writing, and it rewards pure accuracy: every word you type correctly, in the right position, adds up.

How do you hit Speaking 88?
Work across the speaking tasks and compare your content, pronunciation and fluency where those traits apply. Explain the actual image, lecture, discussion or situation rather than reciting unrelated material. Our Describe Image guide gives an example of building a response from the prompt.
How do you hit Listening 69 and Reading 70?
Listening 69 and Reading 70 are below the former flat 79 requirement, but your own performance determines the practice you need. Write from Dictation contributes to Listening and Writing. Our Summarize Spoken Text guide explains why normal sentences work for that task; do not apply Summarize Written Text's one-sentence rule to it.
What should your prep priority be?
Choose a priority from your recent mistakes, then check whether it improves on unfamiliar material. These are possible practice areas, not a universal ranking of score impact:
- Write Essay: address the prompt with a clear argument and relevant support, then check recurring grammar and spelling errors.
- The four hybrid speaking tasks (Describe Image, Re-tell Lecture, Summarise Group Discussion, Respond to a Situation) - drop template openers and closers before you drill anything else.
- Read Aloud - fix rhythm and pausing so it reads as natural speech, not a recitation.
- Write from Dictation - drill daily; it counts toward both Listening and Writing.
- Summarise Written Text - master the one sentence formula for quick, reliable Writing marks.
- One full length, timed mock test, so you feel the real pacing before test day.
What if you cannot hit 85 and 88?
Proficient English is worth 10 points instead of 20, and the bar is meaningfully lower: at least Listening 58, Reading 59, Writing 69, and Speaking 76 for tests sat on or after 7 August 2025. For some visa streams, 10 points from Proficient plus points elsewhere, age, skilled employment, a regional nomination, still clears the invitation threshold, so it is worth checking your full points total before assuming Superior is the only option. Our PTE score requirements for Australia and the UK guide covers both Proficient and the UK's own English requirement in more detail, and the PTE for Australia page has the full points table.
Always confirm the live numbers on the official Home Affairs Superior English page before you book, since visa English requirements do change.
